James Shaheed, 28, of Poughkeepsie, was removed from life support on Friday, Feb. 8, said City of Poughkeepsie Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

An autopsy conducted on Saturday showed he died from a gunshot to the head.

A 15-year-old teen has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Shaheed and another 41-year-old man who was an innocent bystander. Clark did not say when or if the charges would be upgraded to murder now that Shaheed has died.

The teen, a City of Poughkeepsie resident, was arrested around 2 p.m. Tuesday, Fe b. 5, by the City of Poughkeepsie Police and is being held in a detention center without bail, said Clark.

The shootings took place around 3:23 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the area of S. Cherry and Church streets, Clark said.

When officers arrived on the scene they found Shaheed with a gunshot wound to the head. At the same time, Vassar Hospital called reporting that another gunshot victim, a 41-year-old man, had been brought to the hospital by private vehicle.

The other victim, a city resident, was released from the hospital, Clark said.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
